We’ve just had four relaxing days off the bike (except for one day where Dave rode with Toby) in Loreto, a place recommended by my sister who’s been here before. It’s a charming big town/small city on the Sea of Cortes where we see many snowbirds wandering the streets. Dave and I have walked home every evening after dark and sometimes after 10:00 p.m. with nothing even close to feeling nervous. People smile and tells us buens noches or buens dias or hola. The town is catering to touristas for certain but it’s also got great history.
Yesterday, along with our friends Brenda and Toby, Dimitri and Sierra, we took a boat tour for $100/ea to an island about an hours boat ride (can’t remember the name right now) to view the Blue Footed Boobies. NOT a nudie beach like we’d thought! In fact, these are birds and they really do have blue feet and are adorable. We were told it was only here and the Galapagos Islands, another place Dave and I hope to get to on our trip, where the Boobies are seen. We did see many and also some ornery sea lions in need of many, many breath mints. Once we’d circumnavigated the island, the captain dropped us off on the most beautiful beach. I’d never seen water so clear and was getting pretty excited to ditch my down jacket and climb into my swim suit when I realized it was still pretty chilly. I went for a hike to get warmed up enough to swim while Sierra and Brenda lounged in the sun and Toby, Dave and Dimitri went fishing off the boat. They returned a few hours later with two huge fish, which we paid a restaurant $5/fish to prepare for us. That meal was amazing; ceviche, and the rest grilled along with rice and vegetables, delicious margaritas and right across from the beach where we’d set out earlier that day. A fantastic day.
Tomorrow we will head for La Paz and book our ferry ride across to the mainland of Mexico for later in the week. We hope to spend NY with our friends Brenda and Toby and perhaps Sierra and Dimitri as well, in La Paz.
